The weather is getting warmer, which means both us and our pets are getting outside more! So, let’s talk about ticks. Tick exposure can occur year-round, but ticks are most active during the warmer months. Tick bites can affect both people and pets, so it’s important to know where your pet could be exposed and what to do if you find a tick on your pet.
What are ticks & why should I care about them?
Ticks are bloodsucking parasites that can cause disease in both people and pets. The most common of which is Lyme Disease.
Where are ticks?
- Ticks live in grassy, wooded areas. This means your pet could pick up a tick on a hike, in the park, or even in your backyard.
- Ticks can also hitch a ride on you or your clothing! Indoor pets are not completely protected against ticks.
How do I check my pet for ticks?
Ticks like to hide! The graphic below shows where you should check your pet for ticks when coming in from outside. Make sure to check yourself and your clothing as well.

How can I protect my pet?
- Keep your pet on a monthly flea & tick preventative year-round.
- Ask your veterinarian about vaccinating your pet against Lyme Disease
- When outside be sure you and your pet stay towards the middle of trails when hiking or at parks, avoiding tall grasses and densely wooded areas.
